Hollywood’s Golden Couple: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

Making Each Other Laugh

Even though Newman was extremely happy with his new lady, he still felt “guilty as hell” for leaving his first wife and breaking up his family. The actor was quoted saying, “I’ll carry it with me for the rest of my life.” Nevertheless, the couple settled down in an 18th Century Connecticut farmhouse and enjoyed their marriage.

Woodward told Today, “He’s very good looking and very sexy, and all of those things, but all of that goes out the window and what is finally left is, if you can make somebody laugh, and he sure does keep me laughing.” Newman believes that their successful relationship is due to some “combination of lust and respect and patience. And determination.”
