A Strained Relationship

Johnny Carson has three sons from his first marriage only. His three other marriages didn’t result in any other children. His son, Rick Carson, struggled mentally. Back then, mental illness wasn’t spoken about much. Rick Carson was committed to a mental hospital, and Johnny flat out refused to see him.
Sadly, this story doesn’t have a happy ending. On June 21, 1991, Rick was driving his car in Morro Bay, California, when it dropped 125 feet off the edge. He was killed instantly. Johnny ended up paying tribute to his son on the show, but it didn’t change the unfortunate fact that their relationship was strained.
