Khertek Anchimaa was born in the Republic of Tuva which was, at the time, part of China. The district changed hands sometimes, and, eventually came under Soviet jurisdiction. Anchimaa stood out as a child, learning to read and write in Russian at an early age at a time when most of her fellow Tuvians weren’t literate even in their native language. She climbed the ladder within the local Communist party and, in 1940, became Head of State of the Tuvan People’s Republic.
